Like many busy professionals, finding time for my own development isn't always easy.
Between supporting clients, working on complex projects and keeping pace with the rapid changes affecting organisations today, professional development can easily slip down the priority list. But over the past eight months, I've been reminded why making time to learn is essential.
Last October, I joined the UNICON Leadership Academy, an eight-month programme designed for leaders working in executive education. It was an opportunity to step away from the day-to-day, challenge my own thinking and learn alongside colleagues from business schools around the world.
Putting purpose into action
One of the biggest takeaways for me was something we often discuss with our own clients at Alliance Manchester Business School: purpose matters. The programme began by exploring how we put purpose into action, ensuring that what we design and deliver genuinely creates value for learners and organisations. That theme stayed with me throughout the programme.
From attending the UNICON Conference in Washington DC to collaborating with peers through online sessions, we explored the changing global landscape of executive education, the challenges organisations are facing, and how providers like us can continue to evolve to meet those needs.
Asking better questions about AI
Unsurprisingly, artificial intelligence featured heavily in our discussions. But rather than focusing purely on the technology itself, we asked bigger questions.
- Are we solving the right problems?
- How do we measure meaningful impact?
- Are organisations leading the demand for AI-enabled learning, or are we simply responding to changing expectations?
- Perhaps most importantly, how do we build cultures where experimentation and continuous learning become part of everyday practice?
These conversations reinforced something I see every day when working with organisations across sectors, which is, there are rarely simple answers. Success comes from being willing to ask better questions, test new ideas and keep learning.
Creating value that solves real problems
Another area that really resonated with me was how we create value. We explored organisational structures, operational excellence and product thinking, challenging ourselves to consider the gap between what we believe creates value and what our clients actually value.
One insight that has stayed with me is that it's entirely possible to build something brilliant that solves no meaningful problem.
For me, that's a powerful reminder that great executive education should never start with the programme. It should always start with understanding the challenge an individual or organisation is trying to solve.
Learning through global perspectives
Perhaps the most rewarding part of the experience was learning alongside an international network of colleagues. Despite working in different countries and institutions, we shared remarkably similar challenges. Exchanging ideas, learning from examples of innovation and building relationships that will continue long after the programme has finished has been invaluable.
Completing the Leadership Academy has strengthened my own professional development as well as reinforced my belief in the value of lifelong learning.
I know first-hand how difficult it can be to step away from a busy schedule to invest in yourself. But I also know how valuable that investment can be. Every conversation, every new perspective and every challenge to my own thinking has helped me return to work with fresh ideas and a renewed focus on delivering the best possible experience for the organisations we partner with.
