Which AMBS master's degree is right for you?

A guide to choosing the right course

Choosing a master’s degree is an exciting step, but with so many options available, it can feel overwhelming. You may already know that you want to study business, management, finance, or marketing, but deciding which course best matches your interests and career ambitions can be one of the hardest parts of the process.

At Alliance Manchester Business School (AMBS), our master's degrees are designed for students with a wide range of academic backgrounds, interests, and professional goals. Whether you're looking to launch a career in finance, develop specialist marketing expertise, or work across international markets, there's a course designed to help you get there. AMBS combines academic excellence with practical learning, helping students develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to succeed in an increasingly competitive global job market.

While there is sometimes overlap between courses, each degree has its own distinctive focus and is designed to support different interests and career aspirations. The challenge can come from understanding the difference between courses that might initially look similar.

This article will break down the differences between some of our courses and help you see more clearly which is right for you.

MSc Accounting – for students who want to develop an advanced knowledge of accounting theory and practice and prepare for a leading role in accountancy. You’ll spend time learning about financial reporting, audit and assurance, and corporate governance.

MSc Accounting and Finance – for students who like finance but also want a strong understanding of accounting. You’ll gain a high level of understanding in both theory and practice, setting you up for a career in accounting, financial services, or other related sectors. Learn about asset pricing, corporate finance, reporting, and econometrics.

MSc Finance – suited to students who want to focus purely on finance, and whose interests lie in investments, financial markets, and corporate finance. Learn about investment analysis, quantitative skills, financial markets and decision-making.

MSc Quantitative Finance – for students who enjoy maths, statistics, and analytical modelling. This is a more technical finance course with a stronger emphasis on mathematical models, financial data, quantitative analysis and risk modelling.

MSc Business Analysis and Strategic Management – for students who enjoy analysing complex business problems and helping organisations make better strategic decisions. It is more analytical and problem-solving focused than a general management degree. This course appeals to students who enjoy critical thinking, consultancy-style work, and organisational decision-making.

MSc Management – for students who want a broad understanding of how businesses work. It covers a range of business functions including marketing, finance, innovation, and people management. It is designed as a versatile management degree rather than a specialist programme and is particularly suitable for graduates from non-business backgrounds.

MSc Sustainable Business – for students who want to understand how businesses can create commercial success while addressing environmental and social challenges. It focuses on sustainability, responsible business, and long-term organisational impact. Students can develop the skills needed to drive positive change with organisations and across wider society.

Innovation, Strategy and Entrepreneurship

The course encourages creative problem-solving alongside practical skills in entrepreneurship, research, communication, and more.

Marketing, Operations and Business Analytics

MSc Business Analytics and Artificial Intelligence – for students who enjoy working with data and want to understand how AI and analytics can drive business decisions. People and Organisations

MSc Organisational Psychology – this is an advanced course that gives a route into occupational psychology accredited by the British Psychological Society. It is suited to students who are interested in workplace culture, employee wellbeing and organisational effectiveness. Students will apply the psychological principles and theories learned during their undergraduate degree to the world of work.

MSc Business Psychology – designed for those without an undergraduate British Psychological Society accredited degree. This course focuses on the science of how people and groups behave at work and builds the theoretical knowledge and research skills used in organisational psychology.
