Welcome to Manchester to everyone who has just started at Manchester Business School. I hope you had a fun and exciting Welcome Week and have so far enjoyed life as a university student.
Looking back at the past few months I must say that I really enjoyed my summer. It’s always nice to be in Germany for a few months at a time rather than for just 2 or 3 weeks during Christmas or Easter. My internship with Bayer lasted 14 weeks in total so I spent the majority of my summer in Cologne. I also made some short trips to nearby cities such as Düsseldorf and Brussels and went to an insight day in Munich hosted by Deloitte.
I spent my first few weeks back in Manchester meeting up with friends I hadn’t seen for more than a year, decorating my new flat and enjoying the sunny Mancunian weather.
The first week of lectures is already over and I’m back in study mode. My timetable for the first semester is quite nice since I’m off on Fridays. My international modules are Corporate governance, Contemporary issues in financial reporting and Business of Healthcare. In addition I’m enrolled in Statistics, Behavioural Strategy and Auditing & Accountability. Two of my modules are assessed solely by coursework and since my financial reporting module is a year-long module, I’m left with only 3 exams in January.
Final year is definitely a step up from second year – especially as the marks I will gain this year make up 75 % of my overall degree classification.
In November I will be travelling down to London to attend an insight day organized by PwC. These events are always a good possibility to get to know the company you are applying for and hear first-hand what working for them is really like. I had to submit my CV, fill in an online application form and complete a series of online tests.
Many of these events are also open to first year students so check out the University of Manchester Career’s website for more details!
