January 2017: A focus on sport

That old saying of “new year, new me” is probably one we can all relate too. So how can you shake the January Blues in Manchester?

Manchester by Bike
Owning a Bike is one of the essentials in Manchester. Not only is it quick to zip around campus on, it saves you sitting on a bus in the Oxford Road traffic and can also help you explore the fringes of the city such as Salford. The city centre itself is becoming ever-more bike friendly with dedicated cycle lanes being installed on main transport routes throughout 2016/17 to encourage more of us to travel by 2 wheels. It also helps keep you fit!

Sporticipate Opportunities at University
The University is a recipient of public funding which offers a wide range of FREE sport and physical activities on campus throughout the week, helping students to lead healthy lifestyles. All you have to do is register online and turn up before the start of the session. From HIIT sessions, Self-Defence, Gender-specific Swimming to Badminton, Martial Arts and Futsal there is something for everyone. The added bonus is there’s no gym membership you’ll end up paying to not use and there’s no commitment to attend each week so you can be flexible with your schedule.

Manchester Velodrome
For something a little different head out to Sportcity (near Manchester City FC’s Etihad stadium) and give Track Cycling or BMX a try. The Velodrome is home to British Cycling and has trained stars such as Sir Bradley Wiggins and Laura Kenny. A track taster comes with all equipment included for around £10 and there are BMX Taster sessions on the specially built track every week too.

Chill Factore / Jumpnation
Skiing or Snowboarding in Manchester? You wouldn’t normally associate the UK with those two sports, yet Manchester is home to Chill Factore right next to the Trafford Centre. Always wanted to learn to Ski or want to hit the slopes – they run student nights on a Wednesday for £15 all equipment included. If that sounds too cold for you, then right next door you have a massive Trampoline Park in Jumpnation as well as an indoor skydiving centre attached to Chill Factore.
