December 2016: My tips for essay writing

Essay writing holds a pretty important role in our academic life. I know, because I currently have two units that are 100% essay assessed. Although I always feel thrilled about the topics I choose (currently I am writing an essay on employee engagement), I don’t seem to be able to manage my time. It is a rather basic issue to address but it seems like it is something everyone struggles with.

So, if you are one of those people who doesn’t seem to know when the party is over, or if you are just a procrastinator that always promises to get things done earlier, this is going to be the article that will help you keep that promise to yourself.

I will break down some personal secrets learned through my first semester that will definitely help you keep track of that assignment of yours.

First of all, what you need to do is divide your essay into small tasks and assign each day with one. That will help you take over your essay and give you tangible proof of your progress. In that way, you won’t freak out about not knowing if you’re going to make it on time. So for example, one task would be to find your readings. If you have 10 readings in mind that you think are going to help you out with your research, divide the work; half this day and half the next one. Don’t forget to keep notes!

Now that you have in mind the arguments you are going to state in your essay, you will devote a day designing your essay draft, placing your arguments in order and distributing the amount of words based on the questions asked.

Lastly, start writing it and assess your progress depending on the draft. Always make sure to leave a few spare days at the end, before the deadline. After you have finished writing, spend one or two days without looking at it. When you come back, you will have a clear mind and your judgement will be more objective. Review your essay and hand it in. You’re done!

No pressure, no last minute frenzy and definitely better quality in your essay. But most of all, you are never going to miss that night out with your classmates you really wanted to go to but had an essay to do.

Cheers to that!
