December 2016: A warm welcome in Manchester

First impressions are always important and meeting people for the first time can be a little bit nerve-wracking. So what better way to break the ice than with a drink in hand!
Back in September, The University of Manchester organised a Welcome Week – a week full of different events, workshops, and activities to help students find their way around the city and show them what to expect in the next academic year.

It was during that week that I had my introductory lecture for Organisational Psychology. The aim of the lecture was to give us a general idea of the course outline and important information about exams, the dissertation, and assignments (a.k.a. all the things that every student avoids thinking about until deadlines approach).

What came as a surprise, though, was what the lecturers had for us – free drinks vouchers. It is not every day that your professor hands you a voucher so that you can go to a bar and have a drink for free. Of course, all of this was planned in advance and the idea was to give students a chance to get to know each other in a more informal setting.

So after the lecture was over, we all went to Kro Bar, conveniently located on campus, where the course conveners had booked a whole room for us. We got our drinks, went upstairs and started talking to each other. The informal nature of the event and the cheerful atmosphere made everyone shake off the initial shyness and just chat to people.

What made it even more fun was that our lecturers were there to join us. Usually, you see the lecturer as someone who possesses more power than you, someone who you cannot imagine having a friendly chat with. However, that was not the case here. Our lecturers are so nice and friendly and were having fun just like the rest of us.

Altogether, the welcome drinks event was an amazing opportunity to get to know people and see who you are going to spend the next 12 months with. It was definitely a great start of the academic year and made the thought of completing a postgraduate degree a little less scary.
