June 2016: Meet the classmates

Since you’ve read about some of my experiences and thoughts at University, I thought you might be interested in getting to know a bit about the other IBM students! My classmates in the programme this year come from five different continents and all bring unique experiences and insights to the University.  Some of them have agreed to share what they were involved in before coming here and why they chose to attend The University of Manchester. Enjoy!

Where are you from?

I’m from Ulm, Germany.

Why did you choose Manchester?

I chose to do a Master’s degree in the UK, as I am able to complete it here within one year. I chose Manchester for several reasons: Alliance Manchester Business School has a great reputation, the content of the study programme was interesting for me, Manchester is much cheaper than London and Manchester Airport allows you to travel within Europe affordably.
What do you like about Manchester (City/University)?

What I like most about Manchester is the great amount of clubs, bars, cafés and restaurants. I love to try out new restaurants and cafés – even after 10 months there are so many left to try.

Throughout the year, there are lots of events, celebrations and concerts offered and I got to see Kygo, Imagine Dragons and my favourite band, Coldplay! Also, the beautiful Peak District is very close if you want to go hiking.

Since it is a very big university, there are a lot of opportunities for students: there is a society for everything (poetry, pole dance, running, choir, scuba diving, climbing,…), the career service supports you with your job applications and the University has established services for all kinds of problems which might come up, e.g. there is a very cheap taxi service offered by the University so you don’t have to walk home when it is dark. The University is very international and you have the unique chance to learn about different cultures and to make friends with people from all over the world!

Where are you from?

I’m from Ghana.

Where were you working before coming to Manchester?

I had just completed my National Service year at Ghana Home Loans, a mortgage firm, before coming to Manchester.

How is Manchester different from your home town and what do you like about it?

Constant electricity and free wifi everywhere? Just kidding. I love how everything is close by in the city centre – I live at most a 20 minute walk from all the places I frequent which is great.
The attractions! My favourite club (Manchester United) is here, diversity of food restaurants so there’s always a new dish to try (I love food).

When it comes to the University itself, I’d say it’s met most of my expectations. I made a good choice coming here. The course itself has introduced me to many concepts I know I’ll be using for life and the people I’ve met and friends I’ve made here have been absolutely amazing! The different cultures have taught me so much and it’s an experience I wouldn’t trade for anything else.

Where are you from?

I am from Kathmandu Valley, the city of mountains and rivers situated in Nepal. It’s a historical place in Asia with a lot of temples and stupas.

What were you doing before you came to Manchester?

Before I came to Manchester, I was working as an IT Risk Analyst in one of the big four multinational audit firms in New Delhi, India.

What did you enjoy about Manchester?

The day I landed in Manchester wasn’t a good experience as it was raining and cold. I felt horrible as I was completely lost. But, once I started living here, I adapted to the culture and lifestyle. I met a lot of people from different parts of the world. I made best friends for a lifetime. They helped me change my perception about Manchester. It was a dark city for me at the beginning, but as the time passed by, it became the most happening place, a city that never sleeps with amazing music, pubs, bars, restaurant at every corner. I would say it’s a multicultural, multi-diversity, multi-cuisine, multi-everything city. Every day, there is something new to explore in Manchester. I have started loving this place and it’s just because of my friends and the experiences we’ve had here.

Where are you from?

I am from Nanjing, China.

Why did you choose to attend the University of Manchester?

The University of Manchester is a world class university which is highly respected across the globe. It has brilliant history and distinguishing achievements which even shaped the modern world. I wanted to broaden my horizon, experience different lifestyles and equip myself with business skills at the same time. The University of Manchester is really a good choice, with good ranking, fame and high-quality education which inspires students to embrace future success.

What do you like about Manchester?

Just as Stone Roses’ vocalist Ian Brown famously said, “Manchester has got everything except a beach.”  Being home to two of the world’s biggest football clubs, Manchester is such a vibrant city with an incredible music and arts scene, fantastic restaurants and cool nightlife (which I seldom experienced before). The passion for innovation and creation has been rooted in the culture of the city. Art is approachable in Manchester; I sometimes enjoyed a rainy afternoon in Manchester Art Gallery, Whitworth Art Gallery or the other museums.
