Dr John Rigby from Manchester Institute of Innovation Research (MIoIR) has been elected President of Manchester Statistical Society for the next two years.
The Society has been an active centre of debate on social and economic issues in Manchester for almost two centuries, and past presidents include Nobel Laureates Sir John Hicks and Professor Arthur Lewis, as well as famous economist Stanley Jevons. The Society has particularly close connections with MIoIR and Professor Stan Metcalfe, Dr Keith Julian, Jonathan Aylen and Professor Luke Georghiou have all served as President during the past 25 years.
Said Dr Rigby: “It is a great honour as the Society plays a number of important roles in local and national life. In particular it supports research on topics of international interest through its Campion Fund Bequest by making grants to researchers whether they are university or industry based, and at any stage of their careers. It also provides a forum for debate on a wide range of important economic and social issues and has hosted many illustrious speakers. I look forward to welcoming anyone from the University to our future meetings.”
