Bridging the divide

The role of Martin Walker, Professor of Finance and Accounting, in helping bridge the worlds of accounting practice and research has been recognised by both the European Accounting Association and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales (ICAEW).

A recent article by Brian Singleton-Green from the Financial Reporting Faculty at the ICAEW singled out the work of Prof Walker whom he said had been a “source of many of the key ideas” in setting up the Institute’s ‘Information for Better Markets’ initiative which explores how academic research can inform issues of importance to practitioners.

Martin, who is currently deputy chairman of the Research Advisory Board at the ICAEW, said: “Brian’s comment is very kind, but really I am just part of an ICAEW team led by Robert Hodgkinson and Brian himself that works to improve our understanding of the role of accounting and auditing in modern capital markets.”

Martin has previously been head of the Accounting and Finance division at Alliance MBS, as well as deputy director (research) at the School. He is currently joint editor of the Journal of Business Finance and Accounting.

Alliance MBS has particularly strong links with the ICAEW. Among the Institute’s current board members is Bob Herz, a Manchester University alumnus who also sits on the Alliance MBS advisory board.
