Why I chose Manchester for my master's: Bradley's experience

Discovering life in Manchester

After studying computer science in the United States, Bradley Grose knew he wanted to take his career in a new direction. Looking to combine his technical background with a stronger understanding of business, he chose to study the Master's in Business Analysis and Strategic Management at Alliance Manchester Business School.

“I had previously studied abroad in the United Kingdom and fell in love with the way that everything worked in the north of England,” recalls Bradley. “So, when I was looking for master’s programs, I wanted to target a school in that region.”

That decision led him to Manchester, a city known for its energy, diversity and global outlook.

A city full of opportunity

Manchester offers more than just a place to study. It is a city shaped by innovation, culture and constant energy, where there is always something new to experience.

“There’s always something new to explore – unique experiences that you wouldn’t have had at your home or university,” he says. “Taking that step out and trying new things has been something that I’ve truly enjoyed.”

From world-class music and sport to an ever-evolving food scene, the city encourages students to step outside their comfort zone and make the most of their time.

“There’s really a restaurant for any type of cuisine you could dream of,” Bradley explains. “You could go to a different one every day, and you’d still be finding new places to go. There’s one on campus called Christie’s Bistro, which is in one of these old 1800s buildings. It kind of feels like you’re in some Harry Potter movie.”

A truly global community

One of the aspects that stood out most to Bradley was the diversity of the city and the student experience.

“One thing that I found surprising about living in Manchester is how diverse the city is,” says Bradley. “There are different ethnicities, different cultures everywhere.”

At AMBS, this global outlook is reflected in the classroom, where students learn alongside peers from around the world, gaining new perspectives and building international networks.

Support from day one

Moving overseas can feel like a big step, but Bradley highlights the support available throughout the journey.

For a student moving across the Atlantic, it could have been a daunting experience. Yet, as Bradley points out, AMBS made it so much smoother. The school supports students from the very beginning of their academic journey, including pre-departure and offer-holder webinars.

“Those definitely helped gain a sense of what goes on in the city of Manchester, what housing opportunities there might be, what the visa process might be,” he explains.

Taking the leap

Looking back, Bradley’s advice to future students is clear.

“Take the leap of faith,” he says. “It’s great to be able to step out of your comfort zone, gain international exposure, and experience something you won’t be able to in the United States.”

“It might seem scary at first to travel this far away from your family and friends, but it will be totally worth it in the end,” says Bradley. “You get to learn everything you’re learning through your program, experience a new city and country, and immerse yourself in a culture you’re not previously used to.”
