How Daniel Mijic is scaling a business with the Manchester MBA

We first spoke to Global Part-time MBA alumnus and entrepreneur Daniel Mijic back in 2021. Now, he’s taking his business to even greater heights. Find out how the MBA continues to benefit him.

Two years after completing his MBA programme, Liechtenstein-born entrepreneur Daniel launched Blue Concept Asia, a private wealth consultancy based in Hong Kong. This month, we caught up with him to hear how his business has grown – and how the Manchester MBA continues to play a role in his success.

In this latest update, Daniel shares key developments in his professional life and reflects on the next steps in his entrepreneurial journey.

What has changed since our first interview?

Our initial conversation in March 2021 took place during an unprecedented and uncertain period, as the world faced the challenges of the pandemic. Despite the difficulties at the time, I am grateful to say that things developed positively - both personally and professionally.

On the personal side, I got married in 2023 here in Hong Kong to my beautiful wife, Anna. She has lived in China and Hong Kong for over a decade and brings with her a rich background and international outlook.

On the business side, we successfully transitioned from the entrepreneurial phase and emerged from the pandemic without negative impact, allowing us to focus on long-term growth and strategic development.

While the pandemic and ongoing geopolitical tensions continue to affect the global landscape, we concentrated our efforts on strengthening relationships with our strategic partners – both domestically and internationally.

Many of these partners are leveraging Hong Kong as a platform for key business activities, and we take pride in supporting them with tailored solutions, particularly in the areas of corporate governance, structuring, and private wealth planning.

What's happening for you and the company now?

We are now in the growth stage of our journey. Our company has established itself as a trusted partner in Hong Kong for private wealth solutions. This includes providing corporate services and governance support to clients managing complex company structures.

While we continue to serve high-net-worth individuals, we've also placed increasing emphasis on engaging with the local German-speaking community - offering our expertise to expatriates who may need guidance with legacy planning or corporate affairs.

Our mission is to be accessible, knowledgeable, and deeply committed to building enduring relationships.

Over the past few years, we have also built strong and trusted relationships with our strategic partners both in Hong Kong and internationally. This reflects the results of our ongoing efforts to position ourselves as a reliable and solution-oriented partner.

Our partners know they can rely on us on a daily basis and feel confident approaching us with all kinds of requests-whether strategic, operational, or personal. We address these either directly through our in-house capabilities or by leveraging our established professional network to find the right solution.

How does your brand developed?

Our brand has become increasingly recognised within our industry and professional circles.

We have invested significantly in branding and marketing ourselves over the past years, and we are now seeing the positive results of those efforts. Awareness of who we are and what we stand for has grown meaningfully.

What's next for Blue Concept Asia?

We are now preparing to take the next steps to scale our business – both in terms of reach and service offering -while also thinking carefully ahead to manage potential risks.

Although we've moved past the early startup phase, we remain mindful that our entrepreneurial journey is still young, and every decision must be taken with long-term sustainability in mind.

What skills do you still use today that you gained from the MBA programme?

Running a business requires drawing on a wide range of skills acquired during the MBA: strategic thinking, financial planning, leadership, and operational execution (to name a few). These skills are not just theoretical but have become practical tools that I apply every day across all aspects of the business.

Whether it is making informed financial decisions, guiding our team, handling risk assessments, or driving innovation, the foundations laid during the MBA continue to prove invaluable.

In particular, the ability to think critically and structure complex problems into manageable parts has helped me to remain calm and clear-headed, even when facing unpredictable or high-pressure situations.

Equally important are the communication and interpersonal skills developed during the programme, which are essential in building trust with clients, motivating team members, and collaborating with partners. In the coming months, strategic management and scenario planning will be of key importance as we evaluate how best to scale sustainably while preserving our core values and service standards.

Do you believe that having an MBA has helped you to become a better entrepreneur?

Absolutely. The MBA experience has been fundamental in shaping my journey as an entrepreneur. It provided me not only with the technical knowledge to run a business, but also the mindset to navigate uncertainty, embrace change, and remain resilient in the face of challenges.

It helped me to develop a balanced approach to decision-making, combining data-driven insights with instinct and values.

More importantly, the MBA taught me to be reflective, adaptable, and to continuously seek improvement, not only in the business but also within myself as a leader. It instilled the discipline to think long-term, the confidence to take calculated risks, and the humility to ask for help when needed.

While belief in oneself is the cornerstone of any entrepreneurial path, the MBA equipped me with a powerful set of tools to turn that belief into action and impact. It gave me the confidence to build something meaningful and the perspective to understand that success is not only about growth but also about integrity, relationships, and responsibility.

Do you still feel connected to the MBA community?

I am still actively involved with the university's East Asia Centre in Hong Kong and regularly participate in alumni and student events. It is a privilege to share my story and experiences with current students - something I do with great pride.

Being able to give something back to the community that shaped me, and to hopefully inspire and motivate others about the possibilities the programme can open, is deeply rewarding.

It is a reminder of how far the journey has come, and how much potential lies ahead.
