Why I chose BSc Management at Manchester
Early in my career, I wanted a programme that would give me a broad, solid foundation across different business functions and industries and this course did exactly that. It allowed me to truly understand how the business world works before specialising.
The programme uses a wide mix of teaching styles and assessments, from case studies to group consultancy projects. This not only kept the learning engaging but helped me develop core skills like critical thinking and problem-solving, skills that are transferable across every area of business.
I was able to explore different pathways, including marketing, finance and HR, before narrowing my focus. No two students followed the same route; everyone’s journey was shaped around their own interests and ambitions.
Manchester was my top choice from the outset. The University’s reputation, particularly in terms of employer recognition and research impact, made it a standout option for me, and it lived up to that reputation throughout my studies.
Standout moments from my time at Manchester
I spent time abroad in Toronto as part of the Manchester Global Graduates Programme, which was a hugely formative experience. I also had the opportunity to lead the UK’s National Award-Winning Accounting Society, and to support prospective students through roles as a student ambassador and Peer Coordinator.
Socially, some of my fondest memories are the late-night study sessions in the AGLC during exam season, surrounded by friends. I loved sharing cultures and experiences at International Society events and, of course, the post-study food trips around campus, the Curry Mile and Chinatown, which were always a highlight.
From undergraduate study to industry
After completing my undergraduate degree, I went straight on to study for my MSc at Alliance Manchester Business School. Once I finished my Masters, I returned to L’Oréal where I had previously been an intern on placement this time as a Customer Supply Chain Manager on the Amazon account. Since then, I’ve completed L’Oréal’s Management Trainee (Graduate) Scheme, rotating through several key operational areas, including Business Systems Integration & Change, Launch Planning for brands such as Armani, Valentino and Mugler, and Credit Management. I’m currently working as a Supply Planner for the UK & Ireland, supporting Redken and Matrix within L’Oréal’s Professional Products Division.
How the course shaped my career
The BSc Management course gave me a truly well-rounded profile to kickstart my career. It provided a holistic understanding of core business functions from accounting and marketing to leadership development and management frameworks which has been essential as I’ve progressed into more senior roles.
Having that broader business perspective has allowed me to think beyond my immediate function in Supply Chain. I’m able to consider management accounting viewpoints, ethical implications and wider stakeholder impact, helping me make more informed decisions with stronger outcomes.
The Consultancy Project was particularly valuable. It simulated real workplace challenges and gave me hands-on experience that directly translated into the professional world. Beyond the classroom, the University’s strong industry exposure through guest lectures, networking events and employer-led workshops helped bridge the gap between theory and practice and opened doors to a wide range of industries.
Advice for future students
My advice to prospective applicants would be to stay open-minded, be bold and be ambitious. Seize the opportunities available to you not just within your course, but through societies, extracurricular activities and experiences beyond your degree.
The opportunities in your next chapter are endless but all in within an arm’s reach at The University of Manchester. Make it your journey.
