Our Original Thinking Lecture series showcases some of the world-leading research from colleagues at Alliance MBS.

This event will be hosted by Carl Gavin, Professor of Project Management at Alliance Manchester Business School.

Will the new role of the Chief Project Officer (CPO) solve all of our project problems?

Project Management as a management discipline and a profession has advanced significantly over the past fifty years, and yet research by academics and professional bodies continues to inform us that projects still often fail to be delivered to schedule, to budget and to specification.

Research also reveals that a critical factor contributing to such failure of projects is the lack of senior-level ownership, sponsorship and support, not just of the projects themselves but also of the project management culture and practices within organisations.

Exacerbating this is the increasing emphasis on agility and pace in delivering strategic initiatives and change—through projects—in today’s era of unprecedented technological, social and environmental upheaval.

The role of Chief Project Officer (CPO) is increasingly being discussed and slowly emerging in literature as a possible solution, with the potential benefit of bringing project management expertise and experience into the boardroom; a 'seat at the top table’ providing a strategic view of—and a stronger voice for—projects at board level; and helping fellow executives (the CEO, CFO, COO and CIO) better understand their organisation's project capability and performance.

In his inaugural lecture, Carl will explore the potential impact of the CPO, informed by his experience with working with senior project professionals through delivering AMBS executive education programmes with companies including BP, as well as drawing on his recent scholarship in complex project sponsorship.
