Global MBA programmes: July 2020 intake

The Covid-19 pandemic is having a significant global impact and affecting many aspects of our lives. We understand that this is an unsettling time for applicants at all our international centres: Dubai, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Sao Paulo and Manchester. We continue to follow advice from Universities UK, Public Health England and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, as well as from local authorities at our international centres as the welfare of our students and staff is our absolute priority.

We are pleased to confirm that the Global MBA and Kelley-Manchester Global MBA July 2020 intakes will go ahead. However in order to plan with certainty, to eliminate any potential disruption caused by continued travel restrictions and to give you full reassurance, we have now made the decision to implement some minor changes to the structure for the first semester.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact our MBA recruitment team.

Global MBA

The key adjustment involves changing the format of the 4 days of face-to-face workshop sessions in July. However, we are in a position to offer two different options to provide flexibility and choice; both of these options allow you to receive the same amount of high quality tuition and to complete the MBA in two years.

  • The 3 day ‘Leading and Managing in a Global Environment (part A)’ and 1 day ‘Simulation Project’ introduction in July will be delivered virtually
  • Currently, all other workshops are expected to be delivered face-to-face as planned

The professors will facilitate the workshop and introduction typically in groups of 20 to 30 students, and although delivered online, the virtual environment will be engaging and interactive, building on our expertise of the Manchester Method and blended-learning methodology. The virtual workshops will offer a similar amount of time with professors and peers and will involve groupwork.

Semester 1: July 2020 – Dec 2020

With this model, you will study four courses as normal in the first semester. All of these courses will start in July 2020. Two of the courses will have virtual workshops.

  1. Leading & Managing in a Global Environment Part A:
    • Virtual 3 day workshop in July
  2. Simulation Project (runs over first 10 months):
    • Virtual 1 day introduction in July
  3. Strategy & Competition Part A:
    • 3 day face-to-face workshop in Sept/Oct (no change)
  4. Operationalising and Communicating Value:
    • 3 day face-to-face workshop in Sept/Oct (no change)

Currently, semesters 2, 3 & 4 remain unchanged with all workshops delivered face-to-face.

Diagram of MBA course structure

  • July 2020: start with two courses instead of four
  • January 2021: continue with four courses instead of two
  • All workshops delivered face-to-face
  • You can still complete the MBA in 2 years

We also understand from feedback from some candidates, that they prefer for all of their workshops to be face-to-face without compromising the length of the programme. The alternative plan provides the opportunity to take all of your workshops face-to-face and still complete the MBA in two years. This alternative structure, which is pedagogically sensible, has been offered to many of our students for a number of intakes as they needed some flexibility in their first term.

Semester 1: July 2020 – Dec 2020

With this model, you get started with two courses in July. You will take the face-to-face workshops in Sep/Oct. You will subsequently pick up the other two courses in the second semester.

  1. Strategy & Competition Part A:
    • 3 day face-to-face workshop in Sep/Oct (no change)
  2. Operationalising and Communicating Value:
    • 3 day face-to-face workshop in Sept/Oct (no change)

This lighter study load in the first semester could benefit students who may face additional pressures in their job in the immediate aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic, or those who would like more time to adjust to getting back to studying. The workload in the second semester will be a slightly heavier than normal as ‘Leading & Managing in a Global Environment Part A’ and the ‘Simulation Project’ courses are reassigned from Semester 1 to Semester 2.

Semester 2: Jan 2021 – July 2021

  1. Leading & Managing in a Global Environment Part A:
    • 3 day face-to-face workshop in Jan 2021 (moved from the July ’20 term)
  2. Simulation Project:
    • 1 day face-to-face introduction in Jan 2021 (moved from the July ’20 term)
  3. Leading & Managing in the Global Environment Part B:
    • 3 day face-to-face workshop in Mar 2021 (no change)
  4. Business Accounting & Finance:
    • 3 day face-to-face workshop in Mar 2021 (no change)

  • July 2020: start with two courses instead of four
  • January 2021: continue with four courses instead of two

  • Complete the MBA in 2 years rather than 18 months

We also understand from feedback from some candidates, that they prefer all of their workshops to be face-to-face. The alternative plan provides the opportunity to take all of your workshops face-to-face, however the programme will be extended to 24 months, otherwise the workload will be too high in the second semester. This alternative structure also gives you some additional flexibility in their first term.

Semester 1: July 2020 – Dec 2020

With this model, you get started with two courses in July. You will take the face-to-face workshops for these courses in Sep/Oct.

  1. Strategy & Competition Part A:

Semester 3: July 2021 – Dec 2021

  1. Strategy & Competition Part B:
    • 3 day face-to-face workshop in Jul 2021 (no change)
  2. Simulation Project (continued from Semester 2)
  3. Live Business Project (start – continues into Semester 4)
  4. Electives x 2:
    • 2 x 3 day face-to-face workshops in Sep/Oct 2021 (any global centre)

Semester 4: Jan 2022 – July 2022

  1. Live Business Project (continue)
  2. Electives x 1:
    • 1 x 3 day face-to-face workshops in Sep/Oct 2021 (any global centre)

Global MBA Finance Accelerated Programme Structure

Global MBA Accelerated

The key adjustment involves changing the delivery format of the 4 days of face-to-face workshop sessions in July and hosting the face-to-face October workshops in Manchester instead of in Shanghai. However, we are in a position to offer you two different options to provide flexibility and choice; both of these options allow you to receive the same amount of high-quality tuition and to complete the MBA in 18 months.

  • The July welcome and workshops will be delivered virtually
  • Currently, all other workshops are expected to be delivered face-to-face as planned, however the two face-to-face workshops scheduled to be delivered in Shanghai will be hosted in Manchester from 8 – 13 October.

We understand from feedback that many of our candidates are keen to get started with the original structure and given these unprecedented circumstances, we are hoping to reduce uncertainty with the option to participate in the first workshop and introduction through virtual delivery.

Semester 1: July 2020 – Dec 2020

With this model, you will study four courses as normal in the first semester. All of these courses will start in July 2020. Two of the courses will have virtual workshops.

  1. Simulation Project (runs over first 10 months):
    • Virtual 1 day introduction: 14 July
  2. Leading & Managing in a Global Environment Part A:
    • Virtual 3 day workshop: 15 – 17 July
  3. Strategy & Competition Part A:
    • 3 day face-to-face workshop 8 – 10 October, delivered in Manchester, UK
  4. Operationalizing and Communicating Value:
    • 3 day face-to-face workshop 11 – 13 October, delivered in Manchester, UK

Please note that we can offer alternative options to the face-to-face workshops if the restrictions resulting from the Coronavirus pandemic continue into autumn and you are unable to travel.

Global MBA Accelerated programme structure

‘Welcome / Induction event’ (1 day) and the ‘Simulation Project’ introduction (1 day)

You will be joined by other Global Accelerated MBA candidates within the closed cohort.

‘Leading and Managing in a Global Environment (part A)’ workshop (3 days)

Global Accelerated MBA candidates may be asked to join the standard Global MBA cohort. However, you will be with other Global Accelerated MBA candidates for the assessed group work. The professors will facilitate the ‘Leading and Managing in a Global Environment (part A)’ workshop typically in groups of 20 to 30 students, and although delivered online, the virtual environment will be engaging and interactive, building on our expertise of the Manchester Method and blended-learning methodology. The virtual workshops will offer similar amount of time with professors and peers and will involve groupwork.

‘Strategy & Competition part A’ and ‘Operationalizing and Communicating value’ workshops (6 days)

China is currently imposing inbound travel restrictions, including quarantines. These measures, along with stringent visa requirements (many visa offices are currently closed), make our students and academics’ ability to travel difficult. There is a likelihood that many of these restrictions may be eased by the time the China residentials are due to take place, but to reduce uncertainty and allow students to plan ahead, we have decided to confirm these workshops will take place in Manchester from 8 – 13 October. Given that the welcome event in July will be delivered virtually, we also wanted to make sure we could welcome you in Manchester in your first semester. You will have the opportunity to travel to China (or any other international centre) for electives in semester 3 if you wish to.

  • Defer the Leading & Managing in the Global Environment (part A) workshop from July 2020 to January 2021
  • All workshops in the programme are thus planned to be delivered face-to-face, apart from the 1 day ‘Simulation Project’ introduction, which will be delivered virtually in July
  • You can still complete the MBA in 18 months

Semester 1: July 2020 – Dec 2020

With this model, you get started with the one day ‘Simulation Project’ introduction in July, which will be delivered virtually. You will take the 6 days of face-to-face workshops in Manchester, UK from 8 – 13 October, with the Global Accelerated Closed Cohort. You will subsequently add the deferred Leading & Manging in the Global Environment course unit to the other two courses in the second semester.

  1. Simulation Project (runs over first 10 months):
    • Virtual 1 day introduction: 14 July
  2. Strategy & Competition Part A:
    • 3 day face-to-face workshop 8 – 10 October, delivered in Manchester, UK
  3. Operationalizing and Communicating Value:
    • 3 day face-to-face workshop 11 – 13 October, delivered in Manchester, UK

This lighter study load in the first semester could benefit students who may face additional pressures in their job in the immediate aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic, or those who would like more time to adjust to getting back to studying. The workload in the second semester will be a slightly heavier than normal as ‘Leading & Managing in a Global Environment Part A’ is reassigned from Semester 1 to Semester 2.

Semester 2: Jan 2021 – July 2021

  1. Leading & Managing in a Global Environment Part A:
    • 3 day face-to-face workshop in Jan 2021 (moved from the July ’20 term), delivered in Manchester or alternatively in one of our international centres with the Standard MBA cohort.
  2. Leading & Managing in the Global Environment Part B:
    • 3 day face-to-face workshop in Mar 2021 (no change), delivered in Dubai
  3. Business Accounting & Finance:
    • 3 day face-to-face workshop in Mar 2021 (no change), delivered in Dubai

Global MBA Accelerated programme structure

Kelley-Manchester Global MBA

The programme was due to start with six days a the Indiana University campus in Bloomington from 2-8 August 2020. Due to travel restrictions that are in place in the UK, the USA and other countries that our students will be travelling from, we cannot provide the on-campus experience in Bloomington on these dates. Instead, we can provide the following two options to give minimal disruption to your studies and the opportunity to have the on-campus experience the following year, if desired. With both options you will start your MBA in July 2020 and be able to finish in two years.

In the first semester, you would normally take four courses. With this option you will take three courses and defer the Leading & Managing in a Global Environment Part A course to July 2021. The introduction to the Business Simulation project will be delivered virtually. The other three semesters remain the same.

Leading & Managing in a Glboal Environment Part A (LMGCEA), delivered by AMBS

Six nights of hotel stay are included in the programme for the initial Orientation Week. Students will be invited to stay on-campus for six nights and the LMGEA workshop will be part of the experience.  Details of the on-campus experience will be provided in February 2021.

Business Simulation Project (SIM), delivered by AMBS

The introduction to SIM will be delivered virtually in July 2020. The Business Simulation Project runs for the first ten months of the MBA.

Looking ahead, we are pleased that staff in our Shanghai Centre are already physically working from our offices and getting back to some normality. Whilst we are dealing with this challenging situation in our lives and in our countries, let’s remain positive and keep working towards our dreams for the future.

The knowledge and professional skills you develop through the transformational Manchester MBA will prepare you to lead and thrive in a more uncertain future – a topic explored by our MBA Director, Xavier Duran, in this keynote presentation: An MBA for an uncertain future.

All July 2020 candidates will also complete our new online Manchester MBA Preparation course, especially designed to help you rediscover core study skills and provide a foundation in key subject areas.
