Alliance Manchester Business School welcomes Professor Gerard P Hodgkinson as Deputy Head

Alliance Manchester Business School has welcomed Professor Gerard P Hodgkinson as its new Deputy Head.

Gerard is Professor of Strategic Management and Behavioural Science and a leading expert on the psychology of strategic management. He joins the Alliance MBS from Warwick Business School, where he was Associate Dean for Programme Quality and Head of the WBS Behavioural Science Group, one of the world’s leading academic units in its field.

Commenting on his appointment, Professor Hodgkinson said: “I am delighted to be joining Alliance Manchester Business School and the wider University of Manchester, both of which are renowned throughout the world for their reputations in research and teaching excellence.

Manchester is my home city and I am extremely proud to be returning to my roots and I am looking forward to playing my part in driving the School into, what I know will be, a very prosperous future.  I am excited to be working with a strong multi-disciplinary team across the university, and in particular to be joining the leadership team here at AMBS, which is helping to drive forward positive change during a time when business education is undergoing rapid transformation. The recent 50th anniversary marks a very exciting time for the Business School as it continues to compete globally in all of its activities.”

Professor Hodgkinson will be working closely with the Head of School, Professor Fiona Devine, to drive forward the University’s strategic priorities (world-class research, outstanding learning and student experience; and social responsibility) within the School. Commenting on his appointment, Professor Devine said: “I am pleased to welcome Gerard to the team and I look forward to working with him as we enter an exciting period here at Alliance MBS.”

Professor Hodgkinson has held previous appointments at the Universities of Leeds, Exeter, and Sheffield, and worked at Manchester Business School in his early career (1986-1988) as a Research Assistant (latterly Associate). For eight years he was the Editor-in-Chief of the British Journal of Management and he is currently an Associate Editor of the Journal of Management and serves on the Editorial Boards of the Academy of Management Review and Strategic Management Journal.  Among other distinctions, he is an elected Fellow of the British Academy of Management, British Psychological Society, Chartered Management Institute, Royal Society of Arts, and the Academy of Social Sciences. He is also an Academic Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.
