Why did you choose to study this Masters course at Alliance Manchester Business School?
After having reflected on myself and analysed various prospective programs, I eventually chose Business Analysis and Strategic Management (BASM) course offered at Alliance Manchester Business School (AMBS) as it perfectly matched my expectations, capabilities and future career plan in business consulting. Firstly, instead of focusing on either business and management theories or consulting skills, the course module was the balanced combination of both that ensures students will be empowered with vital knowledge and powerful tools to handle emergent real world problems. As an exclusive course element, the advanced teaching method comprised of numerous live case studies and the signature client-facing project made the course challenging yet more intellectually stimulating than other similar ones. Secondly, learning at an institution of academic prestige and research excellence like AMBS definitely paved the way for me to bring my capabilities in business and analysis into full play and laid a solid foundation for the career path I wish to follow after graduation. Thirdly, the immersion in the vibrant city of Manchester and AMBS’s diverse environment in particular would definitely enrich personal experience, broaden my horizons and deepen my understanding of the world. Were it not for the partial scholarship granted by AMBS, I would not be able to realise my academic dream to study this course at the school. It was probably the last rationale behind my choice and also what I am always thankful for.
What were you doing before your MSc?
Before coming to AMBS, I worked in market research at Nielsen, where I saw myself continuously grow through so many precious lessons and chances. I worked alongside my wonderful colleagues to provide clients with timely and precise insights into consumers or market, which would then be used in branding, marketing or communication.
Though happy at Nielsen, it has come to my realization that what I was doing - market research - was a powerful tool but still just one piece of the puzzle. What I wanted to understand was more than the surface but a business as a whole. What I wanted to do was help clients decide where to go with a sound strategy before pointing out how to get there using operation, marketing, human resource, technology, etc. So as to see the big picture then confidently solve business problems root and branch, I found myself in need of a comprehensive higher study about business consulting. Now I am here pursuing BASM at AMBS to fulfill my needs.
What are your career plans after graduation?
Regarding the future occupation, I see myself as a business consultant and university professor. In the first 5 years after finishing my Master’s degree, I want to work for a consulting firm where my business and industry knowledge as well as consulting skills are utilised and further developed. In the longer run, I would like to turn this exciting working experience into captivating business, management or strategy lessons I will deliver to students as a university professor. In this way, I am able to live my personal values sharing and creating positive impacts on my home country through education.
What is the best thing about studying at Alliance MBS?
One thing I appreciate the most about studying at AMBS is the opportunity to meet and work with classmates of different personality traits and from diverse backgrounds. Everyone has interesting stories to tell and something I can learn from academically and personally.
How much time do you spend in classes and in private study?
In the first semester, there are 12 compulsory in-class hours for lectures and seminars per week. However, with a heavy workload from presentations and reports, a considerable amount of time should be dedicated to individual research and group discussion.
How would you describe your student experience so far?
I do not view my student experience through rose-tinted spectacles to say everything is good. There are definitely ups and downs. However, the most important thing is I am growing up day by day and so thankful for such an eye-opening and life-changing journey at AMBS.
What’s the best thing about living in Manchester?
I love the cosmopolitan vibe of Manchester. On the one hand, you have chance to immerse yourself in the great diversity of Mancunian communities. On the other hand, from wherever you are, you can probably have the feeling of familiarity here and there somewhere in the city. Manchester is an ideal location for people who love travelling with many different transport links to other parts of the UK and Europe.

Make sure you understand the course that you intend to choose as much as possible by conducting a thorough research on it. It helps manage your expectations and also provides information on what should be prepared for the best studying experience at AMBS. In my case, I followed my heart and chose where I felt a strong sense of belonging AMBS.
What was your experience like on the Brathay residential trip?
Honestly, I had hesitated to go at first but the Brathay trip turned out to be one of the best experiences I have ever had. The trip was well-organised, the Lake district was serene and perfect for a weekend getaway, the staff were kind and helpful. I enjoyed all the outdoor activities, intellectual games and reflecting sessions of the trip. I understood myself a little bit more and came back more energetic, confident and willing to embrace all the challenges that lie ahead. Never miss the Brathay trip if you choose AMBS!
