Bettina Grande, Norway

MSc Organisational Psychology, Class of 2019

Why did you choose to study this Masters course at Alliance Manchester Business School?
Since I did my undergraduate here, I was already familiar with the university’s facilities and opportunities. I also befriended other students who studied at AMBS and they spoke very highly of their experience here. Additionally, I also like the fact that the Organisational Psychology programme is BPS-accredited, and that the content of my degree will be helpful even if I end up going back to Norway when I’m done.

What were you doing before your MSc?
I took a year-long break from my studies by working as a personal assistant only three days a week, and then spending my new-found free time enjoying life and making more solid plans for the future.

What are your career plans after graduation?
I am particularly interested in recruitment and training, so I hope I will end up in either an HR department or a consultancy firm, but if there’s one thing I’ve learned while studying, it’s that I have to keep an open mind because there are so many career options out there that I have never even heard of right now.

What is the best thing about studying at Alliance MBS?
I really like the way this course is structured because it feels like you can develop academically as well as getting a more hands-on experience, and that they use a number of different teaching methods, such as practical exercises and group work. In addition, the university has a good careers service and student support available.

How much time do you spend in classes and in private study?
We have 2 three-hour long lectures every Monday and Tuesday, and then we’re free to schedule the rest of our week however we like. I’ve found that treating my study time like a 9 to 5 job as much as possible works best for me, and then I often spend a couple of hours every Sunday preparing for the upcoming week.

How would you describe your student experience so far?
Hectic but great. While they really ease you into your studies, time will just fly by. I’m already well into my first semester here, but I still feel like Welcoming Week was just yesterday. Compared to my undergraduate studies, we’re not that many on our course, so everyone quickly becomes a familiar face, which I really like.

What’s the best thing about living in Manchester?
As someone who moved here from a small town, I think Manchester is the perfect size. This is a city that has everything you will ever need, including a brilliant Christmas market, concerts, and stand-up shows. You can do something new every weekend if you want, and a lot of it will be within walking distance of the city centre too. However, the best part about Manchester is that it’s the home away from home to students from all corners of the world, and it never feels too crowded.

What advice would you give to those considering studying at Alliance MBS?
Make sure you consider your own well-being and needs; not just the title and content of your studies. While it’s important to think about what you want to achieve with your Masters programme and whether or not AMBS would be a good fit, I would also consider other factors that will impact your life here, such as the city centre, the university campus and its facilities, the student support services available to you, and the Students’ Union and the student societies.
