Alanna Harrington, Ireland

MSc Organisational Psychology, Class of 2016

Why did you choose to study this Masters course at Alliance Manchester Business School?
I chose to study organisational psychology because in the final year of my undergraduate degree I chose it as an optional module to see what it involved and I became really interested in how psychology could be applied to workplaces. I chose to do the course at Alliance MBS because of its excellent reputation, and the inclusion of The British Psychological Society’s Level A and B Psychometric Testing Qualification is also a huge advantage.

What were you doing before your MSc?
I completed my undergraduate degree in applied psychology at University College Cork back home in Ireland, where I was also working as a manager in a supermarket at the same time.

What are your career plans after graduation?
I plan to remain in Manchester and hopefully begin the two year BPS chartership process that will allow me to work as an occupational psychologist in a consultancy. I would eventually like to establish my own firm as I come from an entrepreneurial background and would like to have my own business.

What is the best thing about studying at Alliance MBS?
The high level of support we receive from everybody, especially the lecturers and the careers team. There is always someone willing to help and answer questions, you never get the impression that anybody is too busy. Alliance MBS provides all the resources we need to do well, both in terms of academic results and career development.

How much time do you spend in classes and in private study?
We have twelve hours of class each week, six on a Monday and Tuesday. I try to do at least another twenty hours study, but this isn’t always possible as I’m also working part-time.

How would you describe your student experience so far?
I have found it challenging, but also rewarding. There is a great sense of achievement each time I complete a piece of coursework. Classes are really interesting because they focus not only on theory and research but also on practical applications.

What’s the best thing about living in Manchester?
Manchester is an amazing city with so much variety. There is something to do for everyone, no matter what your interests are. There is a great music scene, nightlife, shopping, and an endless choice of places to eat.

What advice would you give to those considering studying at Alliance MBS?
I would advise them to look at all of the modules offered and consider if these match up to what they’re interested in studying. If they do, then they should definitely apply. I almost didn’t because I felt that I wouldn’t be accepted, but it was the best news to find out that I had been. I considered nearly every organisational psychology masters there is, and in terms of teaching, support, reputation, content and additional benefits the course here is by far the best.
